Week 5 Blog Post
Olivia Langosch
This week I learned about ecology, how it is the study of relationships between living organisms. We talked about how there are predators and prey in different types of environments, like forest, tundra, marine, desert, grassland, and freshwater. Our group watched the video on how dolphins make a mud net. They surround a bunch of fish by putting their tail in the mud under the water. They then surround the fish with that mud, so they can trap the fish. This causes the fish to get trapped in the circle of mud, so the only place they can go is up, so the fish fly out of the water, and the dolphins catch the fish in their mouths for food. The two pictures below are the dolphins making the mud net.
The picture below is a food chain we made with our group. We made a food chain of the forest. We had grass, which the grasshopper eats, then the frog eats the grasshopper, then the snake eats the frog, then the eagle is the the snakes predator. I can relate this to what I've already learned because in school we learned a lot about predators and prey, but now since we are talking about it again, I have learned more about predators and prey because I never really went in to detail about the different types of environments. We talked about some, but we are going more in depth now. So, seeing all of these different food chains that we uploaded, I have a better understanding of each environments and their ecosystems. The picture below is the food chain my group made.
I liked how we watched videos and talked about the ways different predators catch their prey. I had no idea about the dolphins, so seeing this was fascinating to me. So, in my future teaching career, I am going to incorporate videos like these into my lessons so my students can get a better understanding of predators and prey in different ecosystems.
Hi Olivia, I also was very interested in learning about the dolphins and how they catch fish! The video definitely helped me understand more than traditional text. Great post
