Week 6 Blog Post

Olivia Langosch

This week I learned about pollination. The picture above is my partner and I's plant and we rubbed the bee on each flower on each plant to do cross pollination. I learned that cross pollination will create the flowers to reproduce seeds to create more plants. This is why bees cross pollinate; to create more seeds for more plants and flowers.

I also learned about the baby sea turtles and how it's hard for them to survive. We did an activity with "Turtle, turtle, watch out" with the fortune tellers, and see if us, as baby turtles can survive. (the fortune teller is the picture down below.) I learned that 0.1% of baby sea turtles survive to adulthood. That is a very low rate. I can relate to this because in the movie, The Last Song, one of my favorite movies as a kid, Miley Cyrus and her family hatch baby turtle eggs in the sand on the beach. They want to make sure every single one of those eggs that hatch make it to the ocean without any left behind or non-survivors. I knew that this was a problem, but after hearing the survival rates, I realize it's a bigger issue than I thought it was.

I am going to use this activity in my future teaching career because this is a un activity students can do in the classroom, it's fun, and hands-on. Having hands-on activities that are fun, but also have students learning at the same time is so important because it helps students remember these activities for their future. I also think it's important for students to learn about this problem with the sea turtles, so maybe more people can try to help out.

  1. I am also going to use the activity with the fortune tellers from class today in my future classroom. I thought it made the learning so much more fun and engaging. It really showed us how hard it can be for sea turtles to survive, and what kind of things can be harmful for them.

  2. Hi Olivia. I also thought the fortune telling game was so much fun and think it would be great to use in my future teaching. Using the bees for pollination was very interesting to me as well. I also love that scene from the movie The Last Song and think it goes very well with what we learned today about turtles.
