Week 9 Blog Post

This week I learned about natural selection. Natural selection is a process in which individuals with certain inherited traits are more likely to survive and reproduce offspring than individuals without those traits. We did a bean activity where we used different utensils to pick up beans. We found out that the knife, or stick, was the hardest to use, and the spoon was the easiest. The fork got the job done, but we came to the conclusion that the spoons would end up being the best thing to use, and the sticks would die off. The first picture below is our group with our different utensils. The second picture are he beans we picked up, and the third picture are our results as a group about what percentage of the beans were caught.

I loved this activity and will definitely be using it in the future because it was a fun way to learn something new. It was hands-on which I think is super important to incorporate into the classroom for elementary students. I thought by making this a hands-on activity, with it also being hands on made this experience really fun.

I could relate this to what I already knew because when I was in elementary school, we learned a lot about natural selection, but I think this activity gave me an even better understanding of this topic as a whole. We didn't do many activities like this when I was a student in elementary school, but I do remember covering it.
