Week 12 Blog Post

 Olivia Langosch

This week I learned about finding volume using math with length, height, width. The point of this activity was to show how everyone can measure differently. There are lots of measuring errors especially with young students.

I also learned about the essential properties of matter. We did many different experiments with different materials shown above in the picture. We saw if these materials sank or floated, the volume, they can cause electricity, the mass, and if they were magnetic.

I can relate this to what I already know because I remember doing these types of mini experiments in school growing up. I remember being surprised by some of these things. Doing these growing up, I liked seeing everyday useful items that can light up a lightbulb, or some of these things I thought would sink, and they actually floated. I liked that we got to "make our own worksheet" instead of filling one out done by the teacher because it had us use some sort of freedom when doing this.

In my future teaching career, I will be using these mini experiments in my classroom because even for us, as students in our 20s, it was still shocking to see the different items used in this experiment do things we never thought was expected. This is also a hands-on, collaborative activity which I think is important to have in the future to keep students invested and intrigued.

  1. Hi Olivia! I thought learning the properties of matter through this activity was very engaging and hands-on. I think doing these mini-experiments would also be a great thing to include in my future teaching when teaching science because it gets students thinking and collaborating! I enjoyed reading your blog post!

  2. Hi! I also grew up doing experiments similar to the ones we did in class today. I felt like this helped me understand each experiment much better. I would like to use experiments similar to these in my future classroom. They were all very hands-on and engaging.

  3. Olivia, I really like your post. Your idea about incorporating hands on activities is very important to me as well! Great post!
